The reigning European Champion, Portugal made a good impression during the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup, finishing first in Group A with a record of 9 wins and 1 loss. Since then, Fernando Santos’s players have alternated the good and the worst in friendlies (3 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat). Before flying to Russia, they conceded the draw against Tunisia (2-2) and Belgium (0-0) before dominating Algeria quite clearly (3-0). Carried by a stratospheric Cristiano Ronaldo and author of an incredible hat-trick, the Lusitani have snatched a very good draw against Spain in the first day of this group B (3-3).
After missing the last four editions, Morocco has finally managed to compile his ticket for the World Cup. Present in Group C of the Africa Zone qualifiers, the Atlas Lions beat Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon and Mali without conceding a single goal or conceding a single defeat. In preparation for the World Cup, the selection was held in check by Ukraine (0-0) before dominating Slovakia (2-1) and Estonia (3-1). No doubt caught by the stakes, the training coached by Hervé Renard completely missed his entry into the competition, bowing at the end of the match against Iran last Friday (0-1). Portugal relies heavily on the elements that were crowned champions of Europe in 2016. We think of the goalkeeper Rui Patricio, the defenders Pepe and Cedric, the midfielders William Carvalho and Joao Mario and of course the goleador Cristiano Ronaldo, who is already 3 goals scored in this World Cup. Compared to the first match, Bruno Fernandes and Guedes, disappointing against Spain, could be replaced respectively by Joao Mario and André Silva.
Solid defensively, Morocco can count on its leaders Benatia and Dirar (which should find a place of titular on this 2nd match), and the sturdy stopper Saïss. Offensively, Hervé Renard has no shortage of talent with playmakers Belhanda, Ziyech and Harit but the former Nantais could start on the bench today. Injured in the lead during the match against Iran, Nordine Amrabat should be able to hold his place but be replaced a little higher on the ground.
